FAQs

Doesn’t the TrackChair system add extra weight to my wheelchair?

The TrackChair wheels are heavier than standard quick release wheels.
We have made every effort to minimise this extra weight.
Many people are surprised to find that the extra weight goes unnoticed; This is partly due to the following:
- The fly wheel effect, because the extra weight is in the wheels, it helps reduce the chair slowing up between pushes.
- The Improved efficiency during corning, when steering the TrackChair it takes very little effort to slow one rim because the gearing automatically speeds up the opposite wheel so there is less wasted effort.
- The load sharing, TrackChair’s ability to enable the user’s stronger arm to do more work when required.

Can I add the TrackChair kit to my existing wheelchair?

Due to the vast number of wheelchairs now available on the market it would be impossible to design a kit to fit them all.
The TrackChair Kit is designed as a kit for wheelchair manufacturers to incorporate into their wheelchair designs.
We will be releasing adaptor kits for the most frequently requested rigid frame manual wheelchair models.
So please send us an email Info@TrackChair.com.au with your wheelchair's make and model number and we will inform you when a suitable kit becomes available.
We also have wheelchairs available that are fitted with the TrackChair system as standard.

Are the wheels removable?

Yes there is a quick release lever for each wheel, however both wheels need to be removed together with the axle and then the axle removed from the wheels. While not as quick as a conventional quick release it is a simple task with no tools required.

Can the wheelchair accept a standard quick release wheel?

Although not yet available we have a small module that will be an optional extra that can accept a standard quick release wheel, this will allow for a camber setting also and be interchangeable with the TrackChair wheels with no tools required.

Why is the TrackChair easier to move on Carpet and Lawn?

With the axle fitted the TrackChair is 1:1 ratio in a straight line and 2:1 ratio on turns. That means that only half the force is required to turn the chair when stationary; this is a big advantage when the front swivel wheels need to change direction on carpet and grass.

What is full time low gear?

The TrackChair has a extra optional module that is added to each wheel once the axle is removed. This feature now enables the TrackChair to be like a conventional wheelchair with low gear. The hand rims need to be turned twice for each turn of the wheel. This means you move at half the speed but it only requires half the force. Great feature for frail or elderly persons. No tools are required to add these modules.

Can anyone use the TrackChair?

For 2:1 drive mode:- Yes anyone that can use a manual wheelchair can use the TrackChair.
For 1:1 drive mode:- Yes providing they have dexterity in their hand or hands as the two push rims need to be grasped as one. If the two rims on either wheel can be gripped then all the functions of the TrackChair can be used.
